Dawson Springs, Kentucky 42408

Dawson Springs, founded in 1874, population 3,219 in Hopkins County, Kentucky, is a Gold Renaissance Kentucky Community and a Preserve America Community.

The first mineral “spring” was discovered in 1881 and therefore changed the course of history for the city.  Dawson exploded on the scene as a leading health resort in the South.  In 1898 the “Springs” was added to the name of the town in recognition of its mineral water.  At the turn of the century Dawson Springs was in its “golden era,” culminating with the construction of the ultra-modern, 150-room, New Century Hotel.  Between 1900 and 1920, thousands of visitors arrived annually by train to “take of the waters” and stayed at The New Century, or approximately 50 other hotels and boarding houses.  The Pittsburgh Pirates held spring training across the Tradewater River at Riverside Park from 1915 to 1917.  Several other major and minor league baseball teams trained and played exhibition games there.  Today Riverside Park is home to the Tradewater Pirates.

Garden Club Will Sponsor Beautiful Yard Contest

The Pennyrile Garden Club will sponsor a “Yard of the Month” award beginning in June. The award will honor residents of Dawson Springs who take pride in their homes and landscapes, inspiring others to do the same. Awards will be given for the months of June, July, August, September and October. Recipients will receive a Yard of the Month sign which will remain in their front yards for one month, a certificate of recognition from Pennyrile Garden Club and recognition on the Dawson Springs Web site. A resident may nominate his or her own yard or another yard. A nomination box will be located in the Dawson Springs Branch Library, or nominations may be made by calling Imogene Davis, president of the Pennyrile Garden Club, at 797- 2625. All entries must include the name and complete address of the nominee and must be received by the 15th of the month. Judges will use the following criteria as guidelines when choosing the Yard of the Month: •The yard is neatly groomed. •The yard is pleasing to the eye with a variety of plants and landscape features. •Buildings, fences, porches and patios on the property are in good repair. •The yard is free of litter, debris, and junked or inoperable vehicles. •Extra consideration may be given to yards which show additional effort through the use of attractive art pieces, potted plants, birdhouses, decorative mailboxes, lawn furniture, etc. All judging will be based on what is visible from the street. Evidence of the homeowner’s pride in his or her yard will determine the final decision. Nominated yards must be within the Dawson Springs city limits. A yard may win only once in a season.
